Belly Deep in Flowers
Now and then the right rains come at the right time and the winter is not too cold or too warm and the desert blooms, blooms like there were no tomorrow, like the extravagance it appears. Not common, so it is always a treat and a surprise. But not so rare that long-time desert dwellers won't compare this year’s to the spring of 1994, or whenever. It never fails to excite though, to see the desert ordinarily so muted and stolid, as if hunkered down against the fiery heat, or the blasting winds, or the unexpected cold, or almost constant dryness, erupt into color, color so flagrant as to numb the senses. From a height, the desert looks as if stained with patches of pure gold or blue or yellow or purple or mottled combinations. But up close is perhaps even more subtly impressive for flowers will spot the land for mile after mile. Walking is even better for seeing what goes unseen at a faster speed and on your belly is even better for seeing what goes unseen five feet up. Then amazement becomes wonder and spectacle.
