Sonya Coppo
While working for over 25 years as a Registered Interior Designer in the
Midwest, Sonya had many opportunities to use her artistic skills. She painted
murals, furniture, canvas floorcloths, and designed furniture for her clients.
After selling her business and moving to Placitas, New Mexico she is now a
full time working artist. Her work is a reflection of her love of color, and
texture and is greatly influenced by Native American culture.
Sonya’s art has gone in several directions. She has created canvas
floorcloths, gourd art, mixed media wall art, and purses. One of her interests
began over 10 years ago when she saw an historic canvas floorcloth. Her
designs are based on the color palette and patterns of the Navajo Chief’s
Blankets. Sonya paints with acrylics on heavy canvas to create very durable
floorcloths. Her gourd art consists of free standing and wall pieces. All are
highly carved, and she uses dyes, paints, feathers, stones and other objects
from nature. All of her pieces reflect her interest in indigenous cultures. Her
latest interest began after visiting a museum and seeing Plains Indians
Parfleche bags. The original bags were carrying cases made of rawhide and
used by nomadic Plains Indians for carrying personal items. Most were
decorated in geometric designs. Her interpretations of these original bags are
in the form of wall hangings and purses. Because of their simplicity of color
and design they are beautifully contemporary in style. She paints with
acrylics on canvas and attaches items including coins, feathers, beads, and
leather.
Sonya has shown in several juried shows in New Mexico, Colorado, and
Wisconsin. Her work can be seen at Hand Woven Originals, Santa Fe, NM,
Spirit in Art, Madrid, NM , and Rockin R Gallery, Placitas, NM. She welcomes
custom work and invites you to visit her studio.
