Artist Statement:
I like to explore how color and the placement of
undefined shapes create a feeling. I work
intuitively, meaning that most often I work without
thumbnail sketches or even a clear idea for
composition. I start with thin washes of color
(golden colors are my favorite!) to define the
surface on the first layer by pouring or brushing
thinned paint on to the surface and moving it
around with paper towels, squeegees, chopsticks
or any other tool that I think will create interesting shapes or lines. Once
the first layer dries, I look for areas to define further or add to…and the
piece starts to take on a meaning and direction of its own. I always have in
mind my intent: layering to obscure and reveal some shapes, colors, and
lines; and the suggestion that I am capturing information that has been
collected—residual and haphazard.
