Mike Kimball
Native New Mexico artist Mike Kimball has returned to the big skies and wide open spaces of
Placitas after a 25-year sojourn through Northern California.
In San Francisco, Kimball completed a BFA degree in painting and drawing at the California
College of the Arts. He received the Yozo Hamaguchi scholarship for printmaking excellence twice,
which immediately broadened his interest from painting to include all of the traditional printmaking
disciplines as well.
After graduating, Kimball worked in San Francisco as an art director and
illustrator while developing a body of work as a fine artist, and worked to secure
space in local galleries to show his paintings and prints. Kimball also served as a
volunteer and board member of several local non-profit groups that focused on
the visual arts and artists, including Artspan Open Studios, the San Francisco
Center for the Book, and SCRAP, a pioneering organization famous for diverting
reusable materials from landfills into the hands of artists and educators.
His work is collected both nationally and internationally and is included in
several corporate collections in the San Francisco Bay Area, but Kimball admits
that he likes to show and sell his work to local collectors most, as there is
always a connection that is made when meeting those who share his interests
and passions in person. “When I worked in San Francisco, I always liked inviting
people into my painting studio. I could really tell that collectors were as
passionate about the subject matter or technique as I was, and I believe that my
artwork articulates these feelings for them.” says Kimball.
Kimball now works in a newly built studio and gallery space in the Nob Hill neighborhood of
Albuquerque. “It’s the best of both worlds,” says Kimball, “I can work on my paintings and prints,
and talk about art and artists with those who stop into the gallery at the same time. I’m always
happy to schedule a time to view my work or the gallery shows, which change monthly.”
