I have seen Whooping Cranes in the wild twice now, Fall 2008 at Necedah National
Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin, and Winter 2009 at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in
Texas. It has been a very moving experience each time to see a starkly white human-
sized bird in the landscape. They are an iconic symbolic bird. I am working on a new
book of poems and images about them
