ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My paintings are inspired by a spiritual sense of 'home', a search for quiet respite,
reflection and even a bit of nostalgia. The front porches of 19th and early 20th century
homes provide interesting venues for this theme, and were inspired by the Victorian
era home that my husband and I restored years ago. The way in which people utilize
this personal space today is part of the focus of my paintings—how chairs have been
arranged for conversation, gardening tools have been left on the table next to plants to
be potted, or an old stuffed sofa has been replaced by a newer model and found its
place outside. The viewer can create their own narrative.
I am intrigued with space as defined by light, and the dynamic patterns created by
light and shadow. There is always the urge to look between the trees, through the
windows, from porch to porch. But the composition is also defined by the play of light
unique to each season, or the reflection on a glass pane that offers an additional
dimension. The layering of reflected images, oftentimes the landscape, with objects
seen through the glass of a window presents an ambiguous frame of reference for the
viewer. These visual puzzles invite the viewers to enter and solve for themselves the
space of the painting.
Home is where we find the people we know and love, and can be defined by the
house we live in or the land around us. Connecting with our surroundings, as well as
our friends and neighbors in times of need is vital to our personal preservation.
Through my paintings I hope to preserve the natural beauty of our heritage, and the
place we call home.
